We need to talk about Ed Sheeran for a second.
The other day, a rumor surfaced that Sheeran was planning to build a 5-foot railing around his home in order to prevent “opportunities for rough sleeping.” Translation: To stop homeless people from sleeping on his porch.
The Sun wrote about it, and the implication is that he’s a giant hypocrite, because he was once a struggling, “homeless” musician.
Ed wrote the song Homeless based on his own experiences sleeping rough while a struggling teenage musician.
It features the line: “It’s not a homeless life for me. It’s just I’m home less than I’d life to be.”
In his 2014 book A Visual Journey, he said: “There was an arch outside Buckingham Palace that has a heating duct and I spent a couple of nights there. That’s where I wrote the song Homeless.”
Ok…so? He’s ALLOWED to not want complete strangers to sleep on his property.
Planners at the local council are being recommended to refuse permission.
Ed’s spokesperson said: “This is a standard planning application, which was not written by Ed, and it is not reflective of Ed’s views or feelings on homelessness.”
His planning agent added: “We have sought to work with the council from the very start, yet we have been met with barriers.
Needless to say, there’s been quite a bit of backlash, which prompted Sheeran to respond.
Alright– so he claims THAT’S the reason. To keep the paparazzi away. That’s fine and dandy and all, but I still think it’s ridiculous that he had to defend wanting a fence. So what if he doesn’t want homeless people sleeping on his doorstep? Neither do I. Neither do YOU. That doesn’t mean we hate homeless people or WANT homeless people to be homeless. Do people seriously not get that?
HOWEVER. I have a problem with celebs surrounding their homes with big, beautiful walls when they ALSO call me a racist for believing in common sense stuff like countries with BORDERS. That’s the kind of hypocrisy I can’t handle, and that’s the kind of hypocrisy far too many celebs function with on a daily basis.
Thoughts? And goooooo!
